I like the thing about levelling up. I am yet to work on the statistics side of things very deeply. So far they are static and only come into play when doing a dice roll at some point in the game.
A way to increase (or decrease) a stat/skill would be a nice thing to have
Also the level ups could add something to the player profile achievements too - I was struggling to think of something to put there, but I hadn't given it much thought yet.
I'm not so keen on the inventory on the screen all the time. In text adventures inventory is not as in the forefront as say an action or strategy game, where you need to know what you are carrying pretty much all the time. The other thing is it would take up valuable screen space, and to keep it simple and working on as many browsers as possible I prefer to keep it on demand only.
However, I'm thinking of extending the hyperlink thing further - I am thinking of adding a quick click bar with things like the inventory in it. That could be text, but I think some icons would look nicer. So going back to your idea, when you need to view your inventory you need only click on an icon. It could be shown as before in text, or perhaps a popup - for the latter there is probably more difficulty with browser support, but I know some things that might work okay.
